KOBE CITY MUSEUM (078-391-0035)

Special Exhibition
"Asian's Luminous Jewels. Masterpieces of Japanese and Oriental Art from the Seattle Art Museum"

Kobe City Museum's fall exhibition displays about 100 masterpieces selected from the oriental art collection (about 7,000 pieces) of Seattle Art Museum. Seattle Art Museum, founded in 1933 by Dr. Richard E. Fuller (1897-1976), geologist and art collector, has collected artworks from all over the world with a thematic focus on “interaction and comparison of figurative arts”. Of them Asian art, particularly Japanese art, marked the beginning and still shares an important part of their collection. The collection includes a number of notable masterpiece Japanese arts in various periods of time, including clay figures in the Jomon Period, Ishiyama-gire (dispersed volumes of the Anthology of the Thirty-Six Poets), Kana calligraphy in the Heian Period, Jigoku Zoshir Scroll (Poem Scroll with Deer), created jointly by Honami Koetsu and Tawaraya Sotatsu, two prominent artists in the Momoyama Period, and Crows, pair of six screens, of the early Edo Period. The collections of Japanese art, together with Korean and Chinese arts, are renowned as the most outstanding collections in the West Coast of America. The collection of these masterpieces will finally return to Japan after so long time of waiting. Please enjoy the world of “beauty” which comes from Seattle, a sister city of Kobe, with many masterpieces as coming out of a treasure box.
