KOBE CITY MUSEUM (078-391-0035)

Temporary Exhibition "Modernism in Kobe and Hyogo
-First display with Hide Kawanishi's “One Hundred Views of Hyogo”-

Scenes of Kyukyoryuchi (the old foreign settlement) and Kitano in Kobe have long been favorite subjects for painters. It can be said that landscapes depicting Modern western-style buildings and their natural surroundings have contributed to the creation of today's exotic image of the city. This exhibition includes illustrations of buildings in Kobe created by Hirosuke Bessha, Masuki Komatsu, Hiroshi Kambara, Katsumi Motokawa, etc. in the 1930s ~ 1960s. It also features the first-ever public showing of Hide Kawanishi's masterpiece “One Hundred Scenes of Hyogo”, created during the latter part of his life. This woodblock artist is acknowledged to have contributed to the evolution of Kobe Modernism. He created the representative woodblock print “One Hundred Scenes of Kobe” (1933-1936) before the war and followed by a book of the original paintings “One Hundred Scenes of Kobe” (1952-61) after the war. He was then asked by Kobe Shimbun to draw a third series of pictures, “One Hundred Views of Hyogo”, which were serialized on the front page of the evening newspaper on Sundays from January 1962 until December 1963. They include many landscapes and views of Hyogo Prefecture's abundant natural and cultural assets, such as the Chartered Building, which is depicted in the work entitled “Kobe Waterfront”. Visitors to the exhibition can thus enjoy a journey through Hyogo.
