THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, KYOTO (075-761-4111)

The collection of the Museum consists mainly of modern arts of the world, with a particular emphasis on the artists or artistic movements in the Kansai and the western districts of Japan. The collection also includes outstanding modern Japanese style paintings and crafts of the Kyoto School as well as ceramic arts and photographs of the world. The Museum regularly holds both permanent exhibitions to display works mainly from their collection and special exhibitions with a special theme.

"Luxury in fashion Reconsidered"

The exhibition displays some 90 fashion items from 17th Century till now, selected from the collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI) from the “luxury” view point. The display of inter-relation between luxury and fashion in various times and societies explores a future direction of the fashion.

"City of the Avant-Garde-Modernism in Kyoto"

The ways in which arts, crafts and architecture bloomed in Kyoto during different periods have been discussed from many points of view. This exhibition has been held since 1895, when the 4th National Industrial Exhibition took place in Okazaki Park, where the Museum is located. It is not only a retrospective but a comprehensive exhibition, which reviews the culture of Kyoto from a new view point under modern themes such as “Journalism and Arts”.
